Tesla is reportedly building a new “unique EV research, testing, repair, and maintenance facility” in Detroit’s backyard, according to a report in Crain’s Detroit Business journal:

“Southfield officials have signed on with Tesla Inc., which is being described as a dedicated EV research, testing, repair and maintenance facility.” 

The automaker has reportedly started to work on the building at 21375 Telegraph Rd. north of Eight Mile Road. It will be expanding the square footage to create a 34,500 sq. ft. at the Southfield location.

In 2020, Tesla built its first service location in the state of Michigan after successfully exploiting the direct-sale loophole. Now the company operates two service centers in the state, and it looks like it will add a potential body shop to its list of locations.

Tesla officially launched its own body shop program last year after many customers had been complaining of long waits for even minor body repairs at third-party shops.
